Apron update and a question

I really do like this pattern.  If you like aprons or are looking for a quick and easy gift, then this one is for you.  I was zipping right through it right up to the gathering.  My thread kept snapping.  UGGH.  I tried doing 2 basting stitches and pulling them at the same time for extra support.  I switched threads.  I loosened my tension.  I just don't know what else I could have done.  Any suggestions?  I have never had this problem before.

Anyway, this is where I am:

I have my straps sewn and pressed.  I need to sew the ruffles to the main body and then attach the straps.  How are your projects coming along today?

Wish I could advise you but generally don't do this sort of stitching...or should say it has been years!
My quilt is coming along...borders nearly finished!

I was recently making little girls' skirts and had the same problem with breaking threads! SO FRUSTRATING! I tried every thread I owned! And then my mom pointed out to me that every thread I owned was 100% cotton, and that I needed a heavy duty poly thread to be able to gather well - And guess what? She was right! I can gather like a pro now!

Good luck! (And that's my all-time fav apron pattern, by the way!)

I don't know if this is an answer or more complicatd. I use a really heavy thread (like carpet or even ebroidery) and then do a small zig zag over, making sure not to catch the thred, then pull to gather .... love your fabrics Kris!! And thanks for co-hosting!

As some one else mentioned..... you need a poly or cotton wrapped poly. The Coats and Clarks all purpose (find at Walmart)is a good garment sewing fabric. Some times I use it for piecing too.
Sorry it has been so frustrating but the apron is gonna be real pretty.

Well I hope you get it figured out - I've had to use a regular poly thread anytime I've gathered, which I don't do much. It's looking good, girl!

Hope you have fixed your tension / thread issue. The apron is looking wonderful!!!

My only thought was that you might need a new needle. Also, try a longer stitch length. Thanks for hosting this virtual sewing party!
