All Framed Up Baby Quilt

I finished this baby quilt over the weekend.  I have been working on this project on and off for a while now.  I wanted to wait until I was confident about the baby's name, as I have run into a baby name change before.  Nothing worse than having something personalized when it isn't right.

Fabric:  Ruby
Pattern:  All Framed Up, which can be found at the Moda Bake Shop

I also made these coordinating burp clothes. I was very happy with how everything came out.

Out of curiousity, I have had some requests at work for some baby quilts, which I haven't agreed to.  I keep very busy with my own projects.  However, I was curious...how much would you charge for a baby quilt like this?  2 charm packs, 1 y kona, binding, yard and quarter backing, embroidered.

No less than $60.00. It is super cute, Kris. Wonderful baby gift.

Absolutely darling!!! So perfect for a little girl!

I have had requests, and turned them down. Nobody wants to pay what they're worth, they want Walmart prices. Add up your costs for the materials, then figure out how many hours it takes you, and how much you want to make per hour - don't be stingy with yourself, your time is worth something. And don't forget the embroidery - I'm trying to remember the formula for that, it's been so long I can't. I know I put my girlfriend's son's name on his diving swimsuit, and charged $10 - she paid $25. Don't mind doing things for her, she pays well, lol!

Depending on the fabric you use, I wouldn't charge less than $140. Tell them that once and they'll never ask again.

Ok I am in a group that do cakes they charge for the ingredients and then 10 -15 per hour.

You have to ask yourself how valuable is your time and what are you missing out by doing them a quilt. How much they appreciate it and would they value the work that goes into it.

Dont forget the quilting time too and the batting...

Absolutely adorable!! I don't have a clue how much I would charge. I've only machine quilted for a friend in the past and I have a real hard time coming up with a price. Not an easy task. Do be sure you feel like you are getting a fair price for your time and effort. Your work is beautiful!!

The quilt is gorgeous, and the embroidery and quilting are superb. This quilt will become a favorite for baby Olivia. As for prices, if you have the time, enjoy doing it, and would like to make a little pocket money to buy more fabric, go for it!

The quilt is lovely. I really like the Ruby charm pack. The addition of the embroidered name makes it extra special. I've been asked to make things, but people don't realize how much fabric costs. A friend of mine made a medium size quilt for $350. After she made it the people tried to bargain her down. My quilting time is too precious. I only want to make what I love.

Beautiful quilt....what a very lucky girl Olivia is. I'm thinking not less than $100.00.

It's adorable Kris. I have not found anyone who is willing to pay what it's worth for a quality handmade quilt. I only make them to give to those I love.

I would say between $85. It's very hard to get your "time" compensated so it's good if you can break even on the materials. Sounds like you have about $50 into it. I think it's adorable. Love Ruby fabric.

Allie's answer is the best...material cost plus a per hour cost for your time. You have to pay yourself as if it's a job...because it is.

Those are adorable Kris! I LOVE how you've used the machine embroidery in the name -- too cute!

I have no idea what to charge, but I've been asked stuff like that before. When I add up just the fabric and don't even take labor into consideration, people think it's expensive. I've stopped even responding to requests. People usually think you should be able to whip up a quilt for the same price that they can buy the cheap-y quilts at Target or Wal-Mart. So sad!

(Ha -- I just read through your comments -- seems like I'm not telling you anything new LOL!)

Hi Kris!
As everyone else said, materials plus (time x hourly rate). No less! If it took you 10 hours to make it, $100 ($10/hour at least) minimum PLUS materials at retail cost!
I'll never forget when my sister hand pieced, appliqued and hand quilted a baby quilt for a friend. It took her HOURs and HOURS. This was a gift. She went to visit the friend several months later to find the quilt ON THE FLOOR and the DOG laying on it!
Our time is precious, people who value our time and our creativity will pay for it. If not, Walmart/Target/Babies R US have some nice 'cheap'quilts.
I have been making handbags and am often asked by people to make one for them. When I give them a price, they are shocked. We are not mass marketing labor, we are individuals creating HANDMADE one of a kind items.
just my most humble opinion :)

Oh, by the way, LOVE the quilt, I have to charm packs of Lovely and this looks like the ticket for it! :)
How large is it?

Gorgeous baby items! I need to make some baby things too. Maybe seeing these beautiful projects will kick me in gear.
When it comes to charging, I have a hard time too. Whatever you do, don't under charge because handmade is worth a lot.

No way! I just made this quilt, too! I love your embroidery in the center block. It really makes it special.
